The EU RoHS Directive regulating hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment is currently under review. The SIN substances mercury, chromium 6+, cadmium, octa-BDE and deca-BDE are already restricted by the first RoHS Directive that came into force in 2006. The RoHS Rapporteur, Member of Parliament Jill Evans, suggests that the use of Brominated Flame Retardants and PVC should be restricted in the new RoHS Directive.
This proposal would include SIN substances such as HBCDD, SCCP, MCCP and LCCP. ChemSec recently arranged a conference in the context of the revision of the RoHS Directive in the European Parliament. At the conference, hosted by RoHS Rapporteur Jill Evans, leading electronics companies and their suppliers, such as Apple, Sony Ericsson and DSM, supported Evans’ approach and described their story of developing halogen-free portfolios.
