Two SIN List Equivalent Concern Substances now classified as CMRs |
|
The update of the EU CLP Regulation in September resulted in 89 new substances and substance groups on the SIN List. Two of the Equivalent Concern substances on the SIN List 1.0, PFOS and Dibutyltin Dichloride, are now classified as CMRs (reproduction class 2) within the European Union.
When the SIN List 1.0 was launched last year it contained 30 Equivalent Concern substances. The reclassification of PFOS and Dibutyltin Dichloride as CMRs results in 28 Equivalent Concern substances on the SIN List 1.1.
- “This shows the strength of the SIN List Methodology. We applied the REACH criteria in a strict way to provide guidance and take the lead in a proper implementation of REACH,” says ChemSec Project Coordinator Jerker Ligthart. “Two substances that we classified as Equivalent Concern partly due to their repro-toxic properties have now been confirmed as such.”
The Equivalent Concern classification serves as a safety-net, set up in REACH to control substances that do not fall into the CMR, PBT and vPvB categories, but which nonetheless give rise to equivalent level of concern, in terms of potential damage caused. The Equivalent Concern criterion is a new way of addressing Substances of Very High Concern not officially classified.
