Sony Ericsson launches GreenHeart phones
04 June 2009

At a webcast press conference today, mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson, member of the ChemSec Business Group, launched its new GreenHeart products with focus on sustainable innovation. The project builds on Sony Ericsson long standing commitment to eliminate the use of hazardous chemicals from its phones.

The two phones unveiled are flagship products with sustainable innovations that will lead the way for all new Sony Ericsson phones. Use of organic Bromine and Chlorine has been phased out, as well as the use of Phthalates. Increased use of recycled plastics and bio-based plastics, as well as reduced packaging and cut in use of paper manuals are all part of the package which will be the benchmark for the company's entire portfolio.

At the launch, ChemSec Senior Policy Advisor Nardono Nimpuno expressed support for the initiative: "Sony Ericsson's engagement in the ChemSec Business Group, in conjunction with Sony Ericsson's internal work on chemicals management is confirmed in the GreenHeart project. Through the GreenHeart project, with its high ambitions for sustainability and Toxic Use Reduction, Sony Ericsson is striving for a leadership role in the field of corporate chemicals management."

Anne-Sofie Andersson, Director of ChemSec, explains: "A number of high concern chemicals are used in the manufacture of electronic goods such as computers and mobile phones. Phthalates, with their potential to damage reproductive systems, are used as softeners in cables and cords. Brominated flame retardants, with hormone disrupting properties, are added to laminates, circuit-boards and casings. Workers are exposed to these chemicals during manufacture, they leach out during use, and they are released at the end of life of the products. In addition, they transform into highly toxic dioxins when incinerated, as is mostly the case during waste management. Therefore it is highly encouraging when high-profile companies such as Sony Ericsson take on a responsible leadership role in phasing out the need for such high concern material in the products they offer consumers."
