Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas supports the SIN List
01 July 2009

In a interview with European Environment and Packaging Law (EE&PL) the Environmental Commissioner Stavros Dimas said that the Substitute It Now (SIN) List and the Trade Union (TU) list are important and that he has no doubt about the scientific consistency.

He also encouraged the Member States and the European Commission to work towards the deadlines instead of slamming contributions such as these lists to the process. Especially since only 15 substances so far have been proposed to the candidate list, in spite there are more than 1000 chemicals fulfilling the criteria of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs).

Also a senior staff member from ECHA confirm that the SIN List and TU list are scientifically based and of great benefit to industry. An official spokes person from ECHA together with a representative from Solvay, a large chemical producer, however find that the lists are “undermining” and "disrespecting" the regulation.

As a reflection over this interview, Jerker Ligthart from ChemSec, the International Chemical Secretariat, say that “It is no surprise to us that the chemicals industry find it upsetting that their products are brought out into the light for public scrutiny, but it good to feel the support from Mr Dimas on this issue.”
